Horta Da Mata

Horta Da Mata

Brazil

Descripción breve del lugar y las prácticas

The Horta da Mata is located in a degraded remnant of the Atlantic Forest, where its work in environmental education and reforestation plays a crucial role in preserving this fragile ecosystem. The initiative extends its care to Praça José Felix Lisboa, a neighboring public square that also requires attention to ensure the conservation of the surrounding biome. Together, these spaces serve as vital hubs for ecological restoration and community interaction.

The core mission of the project is to reforest the area by integrating environmental education into all its activities. Through agroecological practices—such as soil recovery, composting, and the cultivation of a wide variety of species, particularly PANCs (Non-Conventional Food Plants) and medicinal herbs—the initiative not only enhances local biodiversity but also fosters critical thinking among visitors. Themes such as healthy eating, conscious consumption, urban rights, and the appreciation of local cultural and agricultural practices are explored in these activities, offering a holistic approach to sustainable living.

Since 2018, the Horta da Mata has been a dynamic space open to the community, hosting cultural events and educational experiences. One of its flagship events is the collaborative June festival, Arraiá Maluco, which brings people together in celebration of traditional culture and sustainability. The garden also regularly organizes agroecological workshops and hands-on activities that connect participants to the land and inspire them to adopt environmentally friendly practices in their daily lives.

The project’s impact goes beyond environmental restoration; it strengthens community bonds and reinforces the importance of shared stewardship over urban green spaces. By transforming a once-degraded area into a thriving ecological and cultural space, the Horta da Mata embodies the powerful potential of collective action in addressing ecological and social challenges.

¿Qué sueñas para el futuro de la granja o del lugar en general?

The primary goal of Horta da Mata is to continue restoring degraded areas of the Atlantic Forest while fostering a deeper connection between people and nature. By promoting environmental education and agroecological practices, the initiative aims to expand its impact, inspiring more individuals and communities to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives. The dream is to transform the space into a thriving model of urban reforestation and biodiversity, where nature and community coexist harmoniously. This includes cultivating a greater variety of native and edible plants, creating habitats for local wildlife, and offering more opportunities for learning and collaboration.

Horta da Mata also envisions itself as a vibrant cultural and social hub, where people from diverse backgrounds come together to celebrate traditions, share knowledge, and build a sense of collective care for the planet. They dream of scaling their efforts to include more public spaces in the region, demonstrating the power of grassroots initiatives in reclaiming urban areas for ecological restoration. Ultimately, their dream is to inspire a cultural shift towards sustainability, where communities actively engage in preserving local ecosystems, valuing their natural heritage, and nurturing a more equitable and resilient future.
