The Food Farm is a 16-acre organic permaculture farm nestled in the Waipara Valley, North Canterbury, Aotearoa New Zealand. When Angela and Nick arrived twenty years ago, the land was tired, overgrazed, and lacking life. Guided by the ethics of permaculture—care for the earth, care for people, and fair share—they slowly regenerated the landscape using ecological design, soil-building techniques, and long-term observation. Today, the farm is a living example of agroecology in practice: a resilient food system that nourishes their whānau, supports a vibrant diversity of animals and plants, welcomes Wwoofers, and provides nutritious food to the surrounding community when there is surplus.
Every element on the farm is integrated into a regenerative system that mimics natural ecosystems. Annual and perennial food gardens grow alongside berries, orchards, and an evolving food forest, creating polycultures that protect soil, enhance biodiversity, and cycle nutrients. Composting, rotational grazing, and seed saving help build closed-loop systems that reduce external inputs and strengthen long-term fertility. The land is also home to sheep, ducks, pigs, chickens, bees, and dairy cows—all managed in ways that respect animal welfare while supporting ecological functions such as pest control, fertility, and grassland health. No chemical fertilisers, herbicides, fungicides, or insecticides are used—just natural processes, observation, and deep respect for the whenua.
Today, The Food Farm has evolved into a learning hub where others can experience permaculture and agroecology firsthand. Through workshops, events, and one-on-one guidance, the farm supports people at every stage of their food-growing journey—from families seeking self-reliance to growers exploring regenerative business. Workshops cover topics such as food forest design, soil health, pruning, wild food harvesting, fermentation, animal systems, and seasonal preserving. By sharing skills rooted in ecological thinking, The Food Farm hopes to inspire a future where more people grow nutrient-dense food, restore local ecosystems, and reconnect with the land as an active relationship—not a resource to extract from.

The main purpose of our farm is to grow nourishing food in a way that regenerates the land, strengthens biodiversity, and honours the ecosystems we rely on. We are here to demonstrate that food can be grown ethically, locally, and in harmony with nature—without chemicals, exploitation, or unnecessary waste. Through permaculture design and agroecological practices, we aim to create a resilient, closed-loop system that feeds our whānau, supports our community, and contributes to a healthier food future. Beyond production, our purpose is also to teach, share, and inspire others so more people feel empowered to grow their own food and become active caretakers of the land.
Our dream is to continue deepening the relationship between people, food, and the land, and to show that regenerative, place-based food systems are not only possible—but joyful, abundant, and resilient. We envision The Food Farm growing as a learning sanctuary where families, growers, and communities can reconnect with ecological knowledge and gain confidence in producing their own food. Over time, we hope to expand the food forest, strengthen biodiversity, support regional food security, and foster a network of agroecological practitioners who share seeds, skills, and care for the whenua. Ultimately, our goal is to help build a future where nourishing food, thriving soil, and respectful stewardship of the land become part of everyday life in Aotearoa and beyond.
