The Horta Comunitária da Saúde was established in November 2013 on a once-abandoned public plot at the end of Rua das Uvaias in São Paulo. Transforming an unused space into a thriving agroecological hub, this garden goes beyond organic practices by embracing a holistic approach to sustainability. It recycles, composts, and produces its own fertilizer, ensuring a zero-waste system. By integrating these practices, the garden not only provides healthy, pesticide-free food but also restores soil health, conserves water, and supports biodiversity. Among its diverse crops, the garden cultivates PANCs (Non-Conventional Edible Plants), showcasing the richness and potential of underutilized native species.
Located at Rua Paracatu, 66, near the Saúde metro station, the garden is a vibrant community space that brings people together to connect with nature and each other. Monthly volunteer workdays, held on the second Sunday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., invite participants to contribute to the garden's maintenance and growth. These events foster community engagement, environmental education, and collective action, empowering individuals to take part in creating a greener, more sustainable urban environment. The Horta Comunitária da Saúde stands as a powerful example of how neglected urban spaces can be transformed into productive, regenerative ecosystems that benefit both people and the planet.
The Horta Comunitária da Saúde dreams of a city where every neighborhood has access to green, regenerative spaces that foster community connections and provide healthy, sustainable food. They envision a future where urban agriculture is deeply integrated into city planning, transforming underutilized areas into thriving ecosystems that combat food insecurity, restore biodiversity, and mitigate the effects of climate change. By inspiring more people to embrace agroecological practices, they hope to cultivate a culture of environmental stewardship, where urban residents actively participate in shaping a more equitable and sustainable future.
