Summary description of agroecological practice

The Muda Project is a group dedicated to Extension, Teaching, and Research in Agroecology and Permaculture at UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro). Initially formed by Environmental Engineering students, the project has expanded over the years to include participants from various undergraduate programs, graduate students, professors, and even individuals outside the academic community. The group's mission is to test and disseminate harmonious solutions for both urban and rural living, drawing on the principles of agroecology, permaculture, and social technologies. These efforts aim to generate income, address local environmental challenges, improve individual and collective health, and foster stronger connections between rural and urban areas.

Since its inception, the Muda Project has sought solutions rooted in the ethics and principles of Permaculture and Agroecology. Their work promotes the development of sustainable cultures that balance urbanization with the preservation of natural ecosystems. By applying innovative and practical approaches, the group supports initiatives that enhance biodiversity, reduce environmental impact, and build resilience in both urban and rural contexts. This commitment underscores their vision of creating a more equitable and sustainable food system that benefits both people and the planet.

The project operates through self-management and circular leadership, ensuring that decision-making, planning, and implementation are shared responsibilities among all members. Tasks are distributed based on individual skills, interests, and the needs of the group, fostering collaboration and mutual respect. This organizational model reflects the core values of equity and inclusivity inherent in agroecology and permaculture, enabling the Muda Project to serve as a living example of the sustainable practices they advocate.
